Meet Raphael. Raphael is employed at the multinational e-commerce company Ahmizohn.com which operates dozens of huge warehouses (shipping hubs) all over the world. Raphael is one of four shipping workings employed at the company's largest shipping hub in New England. It is Ahmizohn's policy to put numbered lock "ties" on their truck trailers to ensure no one has tampered with a shipment and to deter theft in transit. Raphael receives 50-60 loaded trucks per hour and his job is to check the numbered locks against his database (done via smart device about the size of a cell phone) and then cut the locks off the trailor before it backs up to the dock for unloading. He does this by grabbing a heavy set of bolt cutters, opening the handles wide, placing the cutter over the lock which is usually a good 12" above his head, then cutting the lock by bringing the handles together (which requires a good amount of effort and force). Each truck trailer has two locks, so he repeats this task between 100 to 120 times per hour. He has developed chronic upper (neck and shoulders) and lower back pain. His wrists have also become painful and tender in the last few weeks. By the end of a shift, he is almost always exhausted and the bolt cutters seem extremely heavy and hard to use compared to the beginning of his shift. In fact, all four shipping workers at this location have developed similar symptoms and one worker has required regular physical therapy for chronic back issues. a) Describe the issues with this job's design. (20 points) (Previous Problem Continued) In-line battery operated bolt cutter with 4' pole and squeeze trigger near base. b) To correct this problem, the human factors engineers at Ahmizohn Inc. have decided to issue a battery powered "pole arm" electronic bolt cutter to each operator. The device is a high powered, electronic bolt cutter at the end of a 1.25 " diameter 4 foot long pole with a squeeze trigger 10 " from the handle to actuate the cutting teeth. The device also has an optional strap so that operators can sling it over their shoulder and carry it when not in use. Describe how an operator might hold and operatate this device when cutting lock ties off of truck trailers as they arrive. Should it address the issues described in the problem description?
