ILLUSTRATIVE ARTICLE: CONDUCTING EXPERIMENTS Student alcohol use and abuse is a major concern on many college campuses. Of course, some populations of college students use alcohol more than others. Indeed, varsity student athletes have been observed to be such a population-using alcohol more often, and more often to drunkenness, than students who are not varsity athletes. Few studies, however, have examined alcohol consumption by other types of university athletes. Barry, Howell, Riplinger, and Piazza-Gardner (2015) analyzed data from the 2011 National College Health Assessment, which surveyed nearly 30,000 college students from all over the United States in order to understand differences in alcohol use (and its consequences) among intercollegiate athletes, club-sport athletes, intramural athletes, and non-athlete college students.
