Imagine that you are a counsellor working at a youth drop-in centre. Sean has come into the centre seeking help. Sean tells you that he is 18 years old and has just been kicked out of home after coming out as gay to his father. Sean tells you that his father is very homophobic and while Sean knew that his father might struggle with the idea, he didn't expect his father's reaction to be so extreme. Sean tells you that his father told him to "get out and never come back". Sean believes he meant it and now Sean is in a state of shock and has nowhere to go. While talking to Sean he keeps repeating that he has nowhere to go and doesn't know what to do.

You have decided to use the Seven Step Model of crisis intervention with Sean. You have already engaged with him, explored the problem/crisis, and determined that there are no immediate safety risks (i.e., Sean is not in danger of self-harming). You now want to explore Sean's support options, help him examine alternatives, and develop a plan to re-establish control. You have decided to start by focusing on his immediate housing need.
