In 1607, 105 men and boys disembarked from three ships in the colony of Virginia and established the first permanent English settlement in North America. By 1609, there were 500 settlers. Those early settlers shared agricultural duties and harvests equally. That is, all settlers worked in the fields; the harvested crops were distributed equally to all settlers. And by the end of the year fewer than 100 of the 500 settlers were still alive. People were desperate. They ate dogs and cats, then rats and mice. Some reports say they ate their deceased neighbors. These first years were called The Starving Time.
But when a new governor, Thomas Dale, arrived a year after the starving time, he was shocked to find the settlers bowling in the streets instead of working. Dale changed the agricultural system. He gave every man three acres of land to work for himself. In other words, Governor Dale instituted a Capitalist system to replace the previous Socialist system.
What difference did the change in economic systems make? Why? What were the results of this new system? Be sure to explain your answers carefully and completely. This is not a research question - you do not need to look anything up. You can answer this question fully by applying the concepts we have introduced in this course.
