In 2018, the company agreed to pay money to settle. The money from the settlement was made available to consumers through a process called remission. The USPIS compared remission requests to MoneyGram records and decided whether to approve the petition.
In February, the administrator started sending checks totaling more than $115 million to 38,889 people who sent money to scammers using MoneyGram and filed a valid remission request before the deadline. Recipients are getting back the full amount they paid to scammers between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2017.
