In Hong Kong, Towngas is a major energy provider that was established in 1862 by the Hong Kong and China Gas Company. Towngas recognizes the need for corporate governance and corporate social responsibility (CSR). However, the extent to which these two affect the company's financial performance remains unclear (Tavassoli, 2016). This research will investigate how corporate responsibility and corporate governance affect Towngas' financial performance. There has been much debate over the years over how CSR impacts the company's bottom line (Hmaittane et al. 2020; Margolis and Walsh, 2003; Barnea & Rubin, 2010). The question of whether CSR affects the company's financial performance is one that has attracted a startling increase in investor interest given how local oil and gas companies, like Towngas, deal with their stakeholders (Tavassoli, 2016). The oil and gas sector provides a fascinating context for study since CSR initiatives may controversies (Bakke et al., 2010; Cheng et al., 2014). Because of the disputes that may arise between gas production and local people, oil and gas corporations may be seen as "irresponsible" on social and environmental levels due to the potential negative impacts that their operations may have on the environment and society (Margolis and Walsh, 2003; Barnea & Rubin, 2010). The planned study will add to the vast corpus of CSR research by demonstrating the uneven influence of CSR on Towngas' access to funding in the oil and gas sector. The focus on oil and gas corporations will also widen the scope of the few empirical studies that look at the connection between CSR commitment and corporate financial performance in the context of the contentious industrial sectors.
