Just steps in front of him several small potted plants strike the ground. pop pop pop Steve jumps backwards, injuring his knee in the process. When the pots shatter, a small piece of pottery flies up and hits Steve above the eye causing it to bleed. Freddie exits the building from a doorway, relieved that no one is killed, and explains that, while he was sweeping, the plants were accidently knocked off the windowsill.
Being upset, Steve tells Freddie that he is aand that he is lucky no one bit the dust. Freddie gets mad. He threateningly gets into Steve's face and then strikes Steve on the face with the broom handle knocking out his tooth.
Through his broken smile, Steve yells loudly that he will come back when everyone is sleeping and "burn the whole building to the ground". Brian, who lives on the second floor, hears this threat through his open window. On several subsequent occasions, Brian sees Steve walk by the building at night carrying a gas can yelling, "Are you happy? Are you satisfied? How long can you stand the heat?!".
