In mid 19th century Ireland potatoes were the essential food source upon which a great

majority of the island's population depended for survival. Following a potato blight in the

1840s, early economists noted that consumption of all other goods had dramatically

decreased during the resulting famine. This occurred despite the fact that the prices of

many of these goods did not change significantly during this period, while the price of

potatoes increased substantially.
