In nursing, we seldom know the true values or percentages of many illnesses or syndromes. For example, if we were asked how many people contracted a particular strain of flu during a year then we could give estimates but not the true count. Not everybody went to the doctor or emergency room. Most probably did not get a test to determine the particular strain of the flu.Sometimes we just deal with estimates.
For example, in a survey done in November 2018, 43% of people in the United States had been vaccinated against the flu with 3.9% margin of error with 95% confidence ("News Scan for Dec 06, 2018", 2018).This would allow us to create a confidence interval:
lower bound = 43% - 3.9% = 39.1%
upper bound = 43% + 3.9% = 46.9%
so we are 95% confident that the true percentage of individuals that got vaccinated is between 39.1% and 46.9%.
