Question:
In response, build upon the ideas for application in the systems and situations identified below.
Academic
In the academic world, systems thinking is an important approach to take when problem solving. When compared to a linear approach it is far superior and will lead to much better solutions. An example of a system in the academic world is the system of students and the interrelationships between them. I think that the system approach has led me to have an open mind to outside the box solutions as well as preventing me from jumping to conclusions.
Professional
In the professional world I try to always take a systems approach with all my thoughts. As an example, when trying to solve a problem or discuss the business, I always consider the interrelationships among the different functional groups that make up our business. Taking this approach helps prevent weak solutions and encourages collaboration. The power of stock and flow diagrams can also go a long way when trying to communicate a systems approach to solving a problem. Another powerful approach is the soft systems methodology which involves interviews and meetings to gain a better understanding of the problem.
Personal
In my personal life I think the SSM is best used when trying to communicate problems and solutions with my wife. I have found that having an open mind and a systems approach is important when trying to tackle our day-to-day problems. Next time your significant other asks you what you want for dinner, think of your answer with a system solution in mind. What is the impact of going out to dinner versus staying in?
