In studies relating to obesity and associated health risks, a large waist circumference has been identified as a risk factor for illnesses such as heart disease and diabetes. A dietician wanted to investigate if there was a relationship between soft drink consumption and waist circumference for young women. The dietician predicted that young women who consumed more soft drink would tend to have a larger waist circumference. A sample of young women was randomly selected and their reported weekly soft drink consumption [in litres] and measured waist circumference [in cm] were recorded.

The following results were obtained.
