In the ethnographic investigation of a small, historical Texas town's high school football team, Foley identified how a community sport contributed to the reproduction of racial, class, and gender inequality despite some members' "resistance". I would also argue that the value system of the players, coaches, parents, cheerleaders, band members, and others involved with "The Team" were significantly shaped by their involvement. Foley suggests from his findings that "sport may be less a site for progressive, counterhegemonic practices than critical sport theorists hope". This research, along with Harry and Beal's, adds to the body of knowledge in sport sociology examples of how sport programs can be used to resist social ideology and contribute to the reproduction of class, race, and gender inequalities.

Sport's Suggested Social Inequalities

For this "Application" assignment and the others that follow in this course, you be asked to apply something we have read in the course to your own work environment utilizing your own management and leadership styles. The focus is on using what we are learning about contemporary issues in the sociology of sport to assist you in your day-to-day involvement in sport management. Therefore, we will often be problem-solving textbook examples or your own real world experiences based on your readings and our discussions. Select one of the moments or findings from the ethnographic study by Foley that demonstrated how involvement in "The Team" created a racial, class, gender, or value inequality that does or could mirror something that has or could happen within your own sport organization. Briefly state what the example from the study is and then describe how this same type of discrimination or social judgement has or could take place in your workplace. Then state how you, as a manager and leader, would mediate and resolve the situation, and prevent the social inequality from reoccurring. (You may also use an example from your own sport participation, but be sure to respond to each part of the assignment.) To facilitate your own response to this "Application" assignment, be aware of an example of this type of problem-solving and leading from the reading when Foley shares about Coach Trujillo's "story telling" mediation that demonstrated his role in redefining racial relations on "The Team".
