The beam is moving in the x-direction at a speed v across a thick plate's flat surface, which is parallel to the xy- plane. One result of this second model is the following equation, which describes the temperature at steady-state on the sample's surface at a distance r from the center of the beam. As is the case for the model of Ashby et al., the new model assumes that conduction is the sole mechanism of heat transfer in the melt. The derivation of the new model is more rigorous (fewer approximations) than the derivation by Ashby et al., which is why the equation is not as simple as Ashby's equation
