For example, in Numbers 1, "on the first day of the second month, in the second year after they had come out of the land of Egypt," (verse 1) God commanded that a census be taken of all the people.In the remainder of Numbers 1, we see the list of the tribes and their numbers.
And again in Numbers 26, "after the plague," God again commanded that a census be taken of all the people.
