Please compare and contrast Answer 1 (The Stewart Hospital and Medical City Healthcare) to Answer 2 (The Geisinger Healthcare System and Universal Health Services). PLEASE COMPARE ALL FOUR HEALTHCARE SYSTEMS!!

ANSWER 1:

For my for-profit health care organization, I chose Steward Hospital and for my not-for-profit health care organization, I chose Medical City Healthcare.

Stewart Hospital:

Their mission is "above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life". Their vision states that "the destination of choice for healthcare excellence". Their values is the acronym ALWAYS which stands for Accountability, Leadership, Willingness, Attitude, "You first" and Safety.

Medical City Healthcare:

Their mission states "committed to providing the highest quality of care with compassion and respect. We dedicate ourselves to: Delivering the affordable health care to all in the communities we serve; being responsible partners in the communities and serving as advocates for the poor and underserved communities we serve." I couldn't find a vision statement, but their values are CARES which stands for Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence and Stewardship.

When comparing Steward Hospital and Medical City Healthcare I didn't see any significant differences. Their mission and values guide them both to provide quality healthcare to their patients and dedicate themselves to improving human life.

I believe that each statement follows what we learned and that there is no difference. A solid mission and vision should solely focus on the organization's most significant goals. It should be brief, clear, instructive, straightforward and simple. It should avoid cliches and stereotypes and instead focus on the organization's goals and the individuals that it serves. I think that these statements guide the organization's strategic actions. This is because these statements focus on important issues within the organization and provides a framework for other elements in an organization's strategic plan. Businesses utilize the vision and mission statements to connect with organizational operations and gain a feeling of direction whereas individuals who do no want to adhere to them are discourages from engaging in the organization's operations.

ANSWER 2:

The not-for-profit healthcare organization I chose was Geisinger Health System (GHS). The mission of the Geisinger Health System is "to enhance the quality of life through an integrated health service organization based on a balanced program of patient care, education, research, and community service." Geisinger's values include kindness, excellence, safety, learning, and innovation. "We treat everyone as we hope to be treated ourselves." Geisinger's vision statement is simply"make it the best"as requested by the founder, Abigail Geisinger. https://www.geisinger.org/about-geisinger/our-values(Links to an external site.)

The for-profit healthcare organization I chose was Universal Health Services (UHS). The mission of UHS is to "provide superior quality healthcare services that, PATIENTS recommend to family and friends, PHYSICIANS prefer for their patients, PURCHASERS select for their clients, EMPLOYEES are proud of, and INVESTORS seek for long-term returns." UHS's values "exemplify the excellence that they offer, at every facility, every day, to every patient, at every encounter. They reflect who we are, what we stand for, how we operate, and how we interact." UHS's vision statement is "Growing by helping people and local communities thrive." https://uhs.com/

    • Are there any significant or subtle differences? I don't believe there are really any differences.
    • If you feel they are the same or different, please explain why. Both are focused on improving quality for the organization and its patients thru quality care.
  • Does each statement (mission, vision, values) follow the guidelines discussed in our lesson? I believe the mission, vision, and values follow the lesson. The mission statements of both are clear and concise (and will fit on a t-shirt as described in the lesson. The values reflect what stakeholders hold in the highest regard and the vision is clear from the GHS leader and has lasted over 100 years and hasn't been changed.
    • If there are differences, what are they?
  • Do you think these statements really guide the organizations' strategic actions?
    • Why or Why not?Having worked at GHS for over 20 years, I do believe that the statements made reflect the original intent of why the organization was created in the first place. Abigail Geisinger wanted a hospital built and she wanted to make it the best for the community she served. It has truly grown into one of the best in the world and stayed true to the values she instilled in its leaders when it was built. I am less familiar with UHS but from what I read they do have the community they serve at the forefront of their vision. They try and integrate wherever possible and keep the patient at the forefront of innovation.
