Individuals differ in terms of age, gender, ethnicity and culture, problem severity, recovery stage, and level of supervision needed. Individuals also respond differently to different treatment approaches and treatment providers. In general, drug treatment should address issues of motivation, problem solving, and skill-building for resisting drug use and criminal behavior. Lessons aimed at supplanting drug use and criminal activities with constructive activities and at understanding the consequences of one's behavior are also important to include. What treatment programs are you aware of for the criminal justice population that are impacted by substance use disorders?

I wanted to share a program that is starting to be used more often in correctional settings. Creating Change (CC) offers a past-focused, integrated PTSD/SUD approach that is feasible in SUD settings. Many treatment programs opt to focus on the present not the past , we know that trauma often drives addiction and that happened in the past. In a Veterans Administration study, CC was assessed in individual sessions, but CC itself was designed for use equally in individual or group modality. Second, CC appears was found to be good in terms of "past-focused PTSD/SUD content: guiding clients to process painful SUD memories as well as trauma memories, and exploring the life trajectory of both disorders in relation to each other in detail. Third, CC provides extensive safety parameters." The findings are important because historically , SUD clients were excluded from most past-focused PTSD treatments and research trials (Najavits & Hien, 2013). The thinking was that the " risk for negative outcomes such as increased substance use, harm to self or others, treatment dropout, and impaired functioning" ( Solomon, Gerrity, & Muff, 1992) this is valid trauma is difficult to work through sober and many with addictions managed the trauma by drinking.

What I like about CC and its precursor Seeking Safety is that it provides a managed process to help people work through their trauma and be able to move forward with healing from it in a safe place.
