Instructions: The purpose of this is to focus on comparing different modes of reasoning by the members of the federal judiciary. You can click on any of the justices to get biographical information, such as how long they served, which president appointed them, and other information. Note who appointed the Justice and the length of time that these justices served on the Court. From each justices site, you can click on Opinions to read the arguments written by individual justices. Another way to examine the Courts influence on public policy is to look at a series of cases dealing with a particular public policy issue, for example, abortion. From the homepage, click on the search bar in the top right corner and search for the cases you may want to examine. Cases were selected ((The public policy issue selected for this investigation is abortion. The two cases selected are Roe v. Wade (1973), and Webster v. Reproductive Health Services (1989)). -Consider how the Courts position on this issue has changed since 1973. (For example, note that former chief justice William H. Rehnquist was involved in all of the cases mentioned above over twenty years. Was he ever in the majority? Did his views change?) After reading the example cases: 1. In the two cases mentioned above from the US Supreme Court on the same public policy issue, compare the majority and the opposite opinion with the minority dissent for both cases and discuss the different opinion 2. Describe all the different modes of reasoning by the members of the federal judiciary, especially in these two cases. 3. Discuss whether public opinion influences the opinions of the Justices, and how? with examples. 4. Describe how the Court's opinion has changed on the policy issue over time, with examples.
