Isoptericola variabilis was used to produce simple sugar for bioethanol production, through hydrolysis of non-edible tapioca powder under batch fermentation system. Laboratory experiments have shown that for each gram of tapioca powder utilized by the bacteria, 0.23g oxygen and 0.01g ammonia are consumed, while 0.75g simple sugar, 0.09g cells, 0.27g gaseous CO2 and 0.13gH20 were produced. Other components of the system such as phosphate can be neglected. Medium containing tapioca powder and ammonia dissolved in 20,000 litres water was pumped into a stirred fermenter and inoculated with Isoptericola variabilis. A total 1250kg of gas was exhausted during the entire batch culture while air was sparged into the fermenter. To avoid the glycemic inhibition to the microbes, the final sugar concentration should not be allowed to exceed 3.5wt%. Therefore, calculate how much non-edible tapioca power and ammonia were needed and excess air (\%) was provided. Aerobic degradation of benzoic acid by a mixed culture of microorganisms can be represented by the following reaction: C6H5COOH+aO2+bNH3cC5H7NO2+dH2O+eCO2 a) Determine a,b,c,d and e if RQ=0.9 b) Determine the yield coefficients, Yx/s and Yx/O2 (10 Marks ) QUESTION 2 Skim milk is prepared by the removal of some of the fat from whole milk. This skim milk is found to contain 90.5% water, 3.5% protein, 5.1% carbohydrate, 0.1% fat and 0.8% ash. If the original milk contained 4.5% fat, calculate its COMPOSITION assuming that fat only was removed to make the skim milk and that there are no losses in processing
