The Organizational Behaviour course seems to provide many opportunities for students to apply and enjoy many of the concepts presented in the textbook and discussed in class. Rebecca, an energetic, persevering and rigorous student, has earned many A's so far. While the knowledge and skills she has acquired during her studies are very important to her, she is not indifferent to her grades. She feels that they will give her a significant advantage when she goes looking for a job, which will be soon, as she is in her final year of studies. On a Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m., Rebecca is immersed in an accounting assignment, but can't concentrate. She is doing very well in all of her classes except organizational behaviour. A large percentage of her grade in this course depends on how well she works as a team, so she feels she is not completely in control of her destiny, especially the grade she will receive. Rebecca recalls the events of the past five weeks. The professor, Mr. Gauthier, divided all the students into teams of five to complete a major assignment that would count for 30% of the final grade. The task was to analyze a case and write a report of a dozen pages. Interestingly, Mr. Gauthier also asked them to present their analysis to the whole class as if they were speaking to "the board of directors of the company in question"; in this way, they would be evaluated on how well the team leader and his collaborators had handled the problem that had been presented to them. At the first meeting, Samuel, Nicolas, Brianna and Maroun elected Rebecca as team leader. Reserved by nature, Samuel very rarely ventures to make suggestions, but if asked, he always has great ideas. Maroun is the life of the team. Rebecca remembers his reaction when she suggested that they meet before each OC class to discuss the week's case study: "No way! Class starts at 8:30 a.m., and I'm already having trouble getting there on time! Plus, I want to finish the last season of Emilie in Paris on Netflix ... ". They couldn't help but burst out laughing when they saw Maroun so indignant. Nicolas already has the look and attitude of a businessman, ensuring that each meeting has its agenda and noting the results, achieved or not, at the end. Brianna is the ultimate trustworthy person. In fact, he misses most of their meetings, sending little notes to Rebecca to share with the others instead. She doesn't know how to react. She also recalls an incident that occurred the week before. Before class started, she was standing in the hallway with Nicolas, Brianna and Samuel, exchanging pleasantries to pass the time while waiting for Mr. Gauthier in class. None of them had noticed the discreet arrival of Maroun, who had gone to sit down without saying a word. She remembers another incident that occurred two weeks earlier. That morning, she didn't have time to eat breakfast because she was rushing to get to her accounting class. After her accounting class, she went to the cafeteria to get a quick bite to eat. After taking the sandwich handed to her by Donald, the attendant, she was about to sit down when she saw the members of her team. She joined them and had a relaxed and pleasant conversation with them, as was always the case when they met unexpectedly. Maroun had then entered the cafeteria, approached their table and exclaimed "Nobody told me we were having a meeting!" Surprised, Rebecca had replied that they had just met by chance and invited him to join them. Looking at them skeptically, Maroun simply mumbled "Yeah, I see..." and walked away. Professor Gauthier told them repeatedly that if there are problems in a team, the members must first make the effort to face them and try to solve them. If they can't find a solution, they should talk to him. Maroun's aloof attitude contrasts so much with the exuberance he showed at the first meeting! An hour has passed. It is now 3 p.m. Rebecca realizes that she is chewing nervously on her pen. The team is due the following week. Each member has completed his or her section, but Maroun has only submitted a draft of notes. He called Rebecca the week before to tell her that in addition to his classes and his part-time job at Tim Hortons, he was having problems with his girlfriend. Rebecca is willing to show empathy, but this is a group project. In addition, Prof. Gauthier's grade will be weighted according to the team's assessment of each member's contribution. Rebecca has every reason to be concerned. She knows that Maroun is creative and that his original ideas could raise their overall grade. She's also worried about him.
