It was a tense Monday morning at the brightly lit up and huge conference room on the 23rd floor of the Toronto corporate headquarters of Easyuse Home Appliances (EHA). The CEO had called for a meeting of all department heads at 9 a.m. Brian, a senior manager of the PMO was attending as the PMO head was travelling. As a seasoned veteran of many projects, Brian exchanged pleasantries with everyone. He could see all the department heads from Procurement to Sales seated well before the start and waiting for the CEO. Reviewing EHA's annual performance, here is the gist of what the CEO said in his short but well-articulated speech. EHA has been a leader in the Canadian home appliances market for more than 10 years with a market share close to 40% at the present. The number two player is Advanced Home Appliances, a Calgary based company with a market share of 25%. EHA is slowly losing ground to multiple competitors who have been mushrooming the appliances market with low-priced "me-too" products. Bounce back - The CEO urged the team to bounce back this year and increase the market share by 10%. Great opportunity - The CEO approved the newly developed vacuum cleaner with multiple innovative functionalities and friendly features designed and developed by the new product development team. He set the launch date for August of this year - well in time for the festive buying season. The "Bounce Back" Project : Brian was pulled into the Vice President's office immediately after the meeting. "You heard the CEO," he started. "We depend on the success of this new product (vacuum cleaner) to re-establish our position as the absolute market leader owning 50% of the market. We are convinced that this product can take us there. It all depends on the success of this launch, which will be headed by you as the Project Lead. Your project scope will cover the entire supply chain from sourcing to placement on the retail shelves. We want to storm the market at launch in August with 100,000 units each priced at $250 for the consumer. We do not want to miss the launch date of 1st August and let competition sneak in with similar products before us." "Please let me know," the Vice President continued, "if you need help putting together a capable team for the success of this project. You can update me on the project status on the first Monday of every month." Brian did a quick calculation and found that he had 150 days to complete project. As he was musing, the Vice President concluded, "If I were you, I would run along and meet with Tim, who developed the product." After lunch, Brian met with Tim, an old friend and colleague who was also the New Product Development Head. "The motor is the heart of this vacuum cleaner," said Tim, "we worked with three manufacturers located in Shenzhen, China while developing the prototype. Each of them has good technical capability. I will share their information with you."
