Jack is a wealthy Sydney investment banker. After his wife Jan dies and his children marry and move overseas, Jack becomes very lonely living by himself in his mansion. He mentions his unhappiness in a letter to his sister Jill who is living in New Zealand.

"SinceJan passed away I have been very lonely. I wish you or someone else dear to me were in a position to come and live with me in my mansion. Of course anyone who lived with me would have no financial worries while I live and would receive a handsome inheritance after my death."

Jill is very unhappy in New Zealand where she rents a small apartment and can barely survive on an income from a job she dislikes. When she receivesJack's letter, Jill immediately quits her job, sells all her furniture and books aflight to Sydney. Jill decides to surprise her brother by arriving without notice. When Jill arrives in Sydney, Jack greets her enthusiastically. However, their relationship quickly deteriorates and Jack eventually throws Jill out of the house.
