Jeff was a salesman at a BMW dealership. The dealership planned a special event ("Event") to introduce a redesign of the BMW5, a mid-sized luxury car. Dealership sent out invitations to its clients announcing the Event and informing clients that representatives from BMW would be present to take clients for test drives.

At a pre-Event sales meeting, the sales manager announced that for refreshment there would be a hotdog cart with cookies and chips. Jeff and other sales staff said that Dealership should have a catered event. They reported that other BMW dealerships were having professionally catered events with waiters serving appetizers and that a hotdog cart did not fit the luxury image of the BMW brand. They feared it would affect their ability to sell and their commissions. The sales manager disagreed and went ahead with the hot dog cart.

After the Event, Jeff posted a picture of the food served at the Event on his Facebook page along with the following comments:

For the launch of a car that will generate tens of millions of dollars for Dealership, Dealership served small 8 oz. bags of chips, the $2.00 cookie plate from Walmart's Sams Club, semi-fresh apples and oranges, and the Hot Dog Cart where our clients could attain an overcooked wiener on a stale bun. Is that wine or champagne you see? No, it's a bottle of water. Even soda was out of the question.

Dealership quickly found out about Jeffs post and fired him the next day for embarrassing it. Dave said it was his Facebook page and his postings were none of Dealership's business.

Do you think Dealership's firing of Jeff was ethical? In your answer, be sure to discuss (a) free speech and (b) privacy in the workplace.
