Julie and her best friend, Amy, have been inseparable since junior high. Amy has been very ill and needs a bone marrow transplant. No one in her family or close friends is a match. Julie even organized a community event to help find a donor. She is desperate to help Amy.

Julie also has apart-timeclerical job at a local hospital after school. As part of her duties, Julie is responsible for updating a hospital database and giving access to financial donors in other parts of the country who help fund transplant searches. Julie is not authorized to take information from this database; in fact, it is forbidden.

However, she has regular accessto the registry. Julie thinks no one will notice if she takes the contact information for a few of the donors and reaches out to them on her own.Obviously, Julie knows this is against hospital policy, not to mention probably illegal, but she is desperate to help her friend.

Consider whether Julie should or should not take the information. Apply either Kohlberg's or Gilligan's theory of moral development. Each response will involve a different set of consequences. Should Julie steal the database contact information? Why or why not?
