Naneix et al. (2015) investigated causes of death in cases of sudden death by examining autopsy
records from a hospital in Garches, France. In one part of the study, the researchers compared
various causes of death for 79 women and 247 men who had a sudden cardiac death. Of the 79
women, the cause was determined to be coronary artery disease (CAD) in 28. Of the 247 men, CAD
was determined to be the cause in 161 (these values are pulled from Table 1 in the article). Suppose
the samples can be thought of as random samples of French men and women who experience sudden
cardiac death.
Q1: Find a 95% confidence interval for the true proportion of French women for whom the cause of
sudden cardiac death is CAD. Give an appropriate interpretation of the confidence interval.
Q2: Suppose we wish to carry out a test of the null hypothesis that the true proportions (of CAD) are
the same for men and women. Carry out an appropriate hypothesis test. Include the hypotheses
in both words and symbols, test statistic, p-value, and an appropriate conclusion that relates to
the problem at hand. (You can use R to carry out the test, but here I'll also accept a hand-cranked
version.)
