The 2 Sample Z Test
An experiment was done to see whether Vitamin C prevents colds. 100 people were randomly assigned to treatment (2,000 mg Vitamin C daily) and 100 to control (2,000 mg placebo daily) The treatment group averaged 1.8 colds in a year with an SD of 2.1 and the control group averaged 2.2 colds with an SD of 2.4. The question is: Is this a real difference or is that just due to chance? In other words, if we chose a different random sample of treatment and control groups, how likely would we be to still see such a difference? To make the significance test, pretend you have 2 independent random samples and figure the SE's.
Which of the following most accurately describes the null box(es)?
IncorrectThere is one null box with 200 tickets. The average of the tickets is unknown but estimated from the sample IncorrectThere are 2 null boxes, each with 100 tickets. One box has an average of 1.8 and the other has an average of 2.2 IncorrectThere are 2 null boxes, each with millions of tickets. One box has an average of 1.8 and the other has an average of 2.2 Correct:There are 2 null boxes, each with millions of tickets. Both boxes have the same average. You are correct. In the treatment group the SE of the average is0.2100
You are correct. Your receipt no. is 156-9207 | Previous Tries |
In the control group the SE of the average is0.2400
You are correct. Your receipt no. is 156-4157 | Previous Tries |
The difference between the 2 averages is -0.4; the SE for this difference is (round to two decimals)0.3200
You are correct. Your receipt no. is 156-8106 | Previous Tries |
What is the value of the test statistic z? (Include negative sign, round to two decimals, and use previously rounded answer)-1.25
You are correct. Your receipt no. is 156-7583 | Previous Tries |
What is the value of the p-value?
Incorrect. | Tries 1/3 | Previous Tries |
Which conclusion is best?
Reject the Null Hypothesis, we have enough evidence to conclude that taking calcium is associated with having fewer colds in a year. Cannot Reject the Null Hypothesis, we don't have strong enough evidence to conclude that Vitamin C helps, the difference could just be due to chance.Tries 0/1 |
