Lab: Impulse and Momentum-The Relationship Purpose: To determine the relationship between Impulse and change in momentum. Go to: https:l I www.thephysicsaviary.coml Physics I Programs] Labs I ImpulseLabl This is Wally, he is an astronaut oating around in space using a re extinguisher as a jet pack. When you activate the \"jetpack\" it provides a force and he begins to move. When you shut it off, he continues to move but he is no longer speeding up. On the left side of the screen are 2 red lines. These represent the laser beams from the phgtogatgs. Ehgtogates are devices used to measure the speed of an object. The time starts when the rst laser is broken, and ends when the second laser is broken, this gives you data that you can use to calculate Wally's speed after the \"jetpack\" has been turned off. Guidelines: 1. Force, mass and force-time are easy to nd on the screen. a. Force e thruster on his \"jetpack\" giving him a push to get him moving b. Mass = how much matter he is made of c. Force-Time = the amount of time the force of the thruster is being applied for 2. Ehgtogatea Distance, and Phgtogate-Time are also found on the screen. beam of light as he passes through, then 10 m later he will break the second one b. Distance = the phgtpgatgs are 10 m apart, so he will travel a distance of 10 meters from when he breaks the rst beam to the second beam c. Ehgtpggtmme = is the time it takes for Wally to travel between the two red lines of the phgtgggtg. 3. Equations: a. Impulse = Force x time b. Momentum = mass x velocity c. Velocity = change in position / time (distance between phgtogates divided by time) d. Change in momentum = va - mvl (in this lab mvl = 0) Erelab: (2 points each) 1. What is happening to Wally's Speed when the thruster is on? 2. If you shut off the thruster is Wally's speed still changing? 3. Which of Newton's laws apply? Explain. 4. How will you gure out Wally's speed between the 2 laser beams? 5. You will need to change milliseconds (ms) to just seconds. How will you change ms to seconds? Scenarios: . How does increasing force-time impact Wally's speed and momentum? . How does increasing the extinguisher's force impact Wally's speed and momentum? . How does increasing Wally's mass impact Wally's speed and momentum? For each scenario: 1. Write a short procedure that will give you the necessary data for each calculation. (5 points each) . Identify the independent variable(s) and the dependent variable(s). (2 points each) . Identify any formulas you will use and how each variable will be collected. (2 points each) . Create a data table and provide data for at least ve trials. (5 points each) . Create a relevant graph in which you compare the bold variable to speed. Your graph should include relevant titles, axis titles, scale, units, and should use at least 80% of the graph area. (5 points each) . Create a relevant graph in which you compare the bold variable to momentum. Your graph should include relevant titles, axis titles, scale, units, and should use at least 80% of the graph area. (5 points each) . Write a brief conclusion (at least two sentences but no more than ve) in which you answer the scenario prompt. (5 points each)
