Legalese is defined as a specialized terminology and phrasing that is used by people in the legal field and used in legal documents. This type of terminology tends to be difficult for the mojarity of the public to understand. Legalese usually includes long, wordy, complicated sentence structures and obsolete formalisms. This terminology also utilzies passive voice and the usage of latin, archaix, or unnecessarily long words, even though simpler and clearer language exists. An example of how legalese is used in the legal field is; "Herein fail not at your peril," which in simplier terms means that the subpoenaed person is required to follow the instructions of the document. Another example is; "In witness whereof the parties hereunto have set their hands to these presents as a deed on the day, month and year hereinbefore mentioned," altought it sounds complicated it simply means "Date" under a signature line in a contract. Overall, since legalese is widely used within the legal field it still has its disadvages including; a bad reputation, misunderstood terms of business, and potential legal trouble. However, legalese is considered a formal way of writting legal doucuments and is still taught in law schools.
