I looked in my teconds and it was three years ago that I worked with XRS. I have been indirectly keeping in touch with how things afe going there through one of my old contnces. The retreat started when we wero all loaded up in a bun. Nane of the patric: pants were told where they were going, so it was to be a big surprise. We traveled about three hous to a duale anch in the loal mountains. I was in charge of the team meetings for the initial afternoon and through the carly afternosa of the a at day. We initially did a few icebreaker fun exercises, followed by some nonthreatening tam exercises. This was followed by me ports from the teams on what they thought were effective team skills. It wes really low-key fruf and, to get dem geing, nof ppecific at all about thair own work tcam. You know, I can remember what happened next as if it were yoterday. Joh ranained really aloef. I had prorio aty arnanged for him, like overyone dse, to be in a team. He joked around with sevaral other men for about 30 minutia before joining his team. Meanwhile, his team went to work without him. When he finally joined them, he didnt say moch. After a few minates he got up and went over to another tean and talked about getting a late-night poker game going. I did not ourfront him at the time, which, reflecting back on things, may hrve been a mistake on my part. Well, that was the altemoon session. Not exacdy a roaring success, but a mumber af the participanes aero roilly geating into the team exercises. The morning session of the next day went about the same. Jah played the pait of the aceial buitrmify. His behavior was a bit obvious to others. Reflecting back on things, I think he was intinaidafed. This was his fint job as a prof ect manager and I think he thought of himself as the "big cheese," the old-faxhioned macho manager. I know he wat throegh the campany's ieam leadership coures, but he must have been sleeping. We had a team-building exercise followed by a discussion on how team members in genend could watk beates together - again, nothing specific. I remember thet one fellow got really annoyed at Iohn's toam for jocing aroun. Hes aid something to the effect that this was why it took so long to get anything done. Sevenl ochas agreed, but them John asid ther whit we were doing in the teams was just a fun game and did not mean anything. That guy got the mesage from lotn and got real quiet.
