Maria has few relatives. Fred is a distant relative of hers who maintains a relationship with her.Fred always believed that Maria was lazy and needed to be pushed to accomplish her goals.

Maria decided to enroll in Park University. Before Maria starts her first year of college at Park University, Fred offers to pay her $5,000.00 if she graduates from college. Fred places his offer in a handwritten note that includes his initials and the date of the note. Fred keeps the original note and gives Maria a copy.

Maria goes to college, works hard and earns excellent grades. Since she is employed full-time at DSCC, it takes her six years to get to the point where she will finally graduate.Maria also borrows and spends far more than $5,000.00 in doing all of this. She maintains contact with Fred, keeping him up to date on her progress, her excellent grades and the various challenges she faces in school, at work and in life in general.

At the beginning of the spring semester of her senior year, Maria reminds Fred of his offer.

Fred sends Maria a note that says, "Since it took you more than four years to finish college, I hereby revoke the offer I made to pay you $5,000.00."
