Materials Read through the procedures listed in the exercises on the next pages before beginning. Then, gather all of the materials listed below and begin Exercise 1. Note: The packaging and/or materials in your kit may differ slightly in appearance from images in the experimental procedures. Student Supplied 1 Aluminum pie pan 1 Assistant 1 Digital stopwatch* 1 Marble or small ball 1 Measuring tape or meter stick 1 Pencil 1 Sheet of paperExercise 1 Errors and Uncertainty In this exercise, you will measure and record the time required for a marble (or small ball) to fall 1 meter for 8 trials. You will then analyze the data to determine the percent error and percent uncertainty ofthe measurements. Procedure Note: This procedure requires an assistant to alternately operate a stopwatch and drop a marble from a height of 1 meter for a total of 3 trials. Please plan accordingly. Part 1: Data Collection 1 Gather all items listed for this experiment. 2 Place the aluminum pie pan on the floor near a wall. 3 Using the measuring tape and pencil, place a mark on the wall 1.00 m above the pie pan. 4 Set the stopwatch to 0.00 s. 5 Ask the assistant to hold the marble above the aluminum pie pan at the 1.00 m mark. 6 Tell the assistant to release the marble as you press the start button on the stopwatch. 7 Stop the timer as soon as you hear the marble contact the pie pan. 8 Record the time interval as Student Operator Trial 1 in Data Table 1. 9 Repeat steps 4-8 for 3 additional trials. 10 Switch tasks with your assistant so that you drop the marble while hefshe operates the stopwatch. 11 Repeat steps 4-9, recording the time intervals in the Assistant Operator row in Data Table 1. Part 2: Data Analysis 12 Calculate the average time for each trial, and then the associated uncertainty using the equation: Uncertainty = Operator, - Operator, 2 13 Record the trial average and uncertainty for each trial in Data Table 1. 14 Calculate the percent uncertainty for each trial using the equation: Uncertainty Percent Uncertainty = Measured Quantity x 100% 15 Record the percent uncertainty for each trial in Data Table 1. 16 The expected value for the dropped marble (or any object) to travel 1.00 m is 0.452 s. Use this information to calculate the percent error for each trial using the equation: Average Value - Expected Value Percent Error = Expected Value x 100% 17 Record the percent error for each trial in Data Table 1.Data Table 1: Time for Object to Fall 1.00 m Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Trial 4 Student Operator Assistant Operator Trial Average and Uncertainty Percent Uncertainty Percent Error
