Meeting privately with Carl and Amy, Daniel told each of them, "I understand how strongly you feel about this situation both the light rail itself and the other issues that it brings up for you about values, past conflicts, and so on. It seems to me, though, that if this conflict continues, the situations in the neighborhood that you're unhappy about will only get worse. And I certainly understand not feeling comfortable meeting face-to-face with people that you feel have values that are in conflict with your own. I'm sure that's hard for everyone.

"But I want to assure you that any process we undertake belongs to all the participants jointly. I set guidelines and manage events, but the way we conduct the process is determined by the parties. If something isn't working for people, we can change it. I think the hope here is that if you make the effort to overcome the difficulties of working together, you can find a workable solution."
