When asked about what her life is like being a small business owner, her response was, "I am exhausted. Managing the ongoing success of a small business created more stress for me than any aspect of my life - spouses, children, and personal finances included. The key to managing the stress and exhaustion was to get organized and recruit and retain the workers I needed. Recently, she has noticed that employee morale is low, the working environment is negative, and there are high absenteeism rates among her employees. Retention of employees was an ongoing battle. Meghan reached out to the local College and asked for assistance from students in the HR Program. Using the worksheets from Guarding Minds at Work, a student assessed all thirteen Psychological Factors. Findings were presented to Meghan. Following concerns were identified:

- People from diverse backgrounds felt they were discriminated against and not treated fairly in the workplace.

- Staff were not being informed about important changes at work in a timely manner by the supervisors (i.e. shift changes, menu changes).

- People at work do not show sincere respect for others' ideas, values and beliefs.

- Employees felt they were not paid fairly for the work they do. They felt the company didn't appreciate the extra effort made by the employees.

- Employees felt that the amount of work they were expected to do was not reasonable for their positions, leaving them exhausted without any energy left at the end of most workdays for their personal life.

- The supervisors were not looking positively at employees taking their entitled breaks (e.g., lunchtime, sick time, vacation time, earned days off).

- Employees complained of various forms of workplace harassment, discrimination and violence they were subjected to. They claimed that workplace failed to deal with situations when incidents were reported effectively. They were not trained on what to do in those situations.

- They felt that the employer didn't offer sufficient training to help protect employees' physical safety at work (e.g., emergency preparedness, safe lifting, handling of hot items).

- Employees were not receiving any feedback at work that helped them grow and develop.

Employees complained that they often lacked adequate equipment and tools they needed to do their job in a physically safe way (e.g., protective clothing, adequate lighting, ergonomic seating, antifatigue mats).

- Accidents were not appropriately investigated, risks were not identified, and no corrective actions were taken.

Recognizing that she is having serious issues while realizing that she is no longer able to manage all operational aspects of the business Meghan has decided that she needs to hire a Human Resources Specialist to do something in order to improve the psychological health at the workplace and create a healthy workplace environment
