'Most Important Concept' Reflection

Details on this weekly assignment.

Each week you will identify one concept or piece of information that you found to be especially important and explain it. In addition, you'll explain clearly why it's important, and discuss how you'll use the information (or are using the information) in your life or profession. You can find more details about this assignment on the next page.

  • Start with this: What is the most important thing that you learned in this week's material? An "important thing" could be a concept or research finding.
  • What is fair game to write about, or what counts as a 'concept'?: A concept = 'the interaction of the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex in adolescence and how that affects behavior' A concept = 'how habituation is used to measure infant memory' A concept is NOT: 'Toddler emotions' (narrow your focus - what important thing did you learn about toddler emotions?) A concept is NOT: 'physical development in middle childhood' - (again, narrow your focus) A concept is NOT: 'how my little boy is different from all other little boys' (this is not a course concept, but it could be an example of one - focus on the concept and then bring in the examples/applications) A concept is NOT: 'old people' (again, what about old people? - narrow your focus) I will be looking for the following in your reflection:
  • What: An explanation of the concept that is complete and thoughtful as well as accurate. Cutting and pasting, or AI sourcing explanations will earn an automatic 0.
  • Whyyoufound the concept/information compelling
  • Howyouwill use or are using the what you learned - in your life, or career.**Here again, you have to be accurate - if you say you learned that celery cures cancer (it doesn't) but then go on to say your brother has cancer and you're going to save his life by keeping him away from celery - well, that's not an accurate application.
  • Each weekly reflection must be aminimumof 400 words. There is no penalty for going over that amount, but if it's just way too long I will have you re-write.
  • It should be clear, and well organized, with an introductory sentence or two and a closing sentence or two.
  • It must be written in the first person.(e.g. 'I was amazed to learn...'; 'My understanding of this concept is...'; 'The reason I ...', etc.)
  • If, for some reason, you need to paraphrase or quote a source you must cite it. Always cite your sources, even the class resources!!!
