Motivation. To have a meaningful learning experience in this course, it is crucial that you put in practice the concepts and frameworks we will cover in class. The objective of this assignment is to sensitize you to the role that digital technology plays in todays organizations and markets. We also aim to make this assignment relevant to you personally, by giving you the freedom to craft its content in a way that fits your professional aspirations or help you contribute to your organization.

Your task. Your task is to investigate an emerging digital innovation that in the short to medium term has the capacity to disrupt your own job, your organization, or your industry. Digital innovation can take various forms, and is thus not solely limited to innovations in hardware, software, and data. The digital innovation could have direct effects on how the IT unit is managed at your organization, and have only second-order effects on the rest of the organization. Alternatively, the digital innovation can also take the form of a new combination of hardware, software, delivery mode, profit logic, and value proposition (i.e. a digital business model), which has strategic implications for your organization. We voluntarily keep the scope of what this digital innovation might consist of quite broad, and we encourage you to discuss with us your ideas in class or by email. Above all, this digital innovation must be (1) important and relevant to you, to your career, or to your workplace; and (2) has the potential to fundamentally transform the nature of work and organizations in some way. Please see this as an occasion to work on something that you might not have the time to work on otherwise. The output will be a written analysis based on the latest available information including news, trade and online sources. The report will make recommendations for strategic action. Despite being informed by frameworks that support your explanations or predictions, your report should be consumable by a managerial, professional audience. Your report should be of about 3000 words.

Here is a suggested structure, but you may take some liberties with how you organize the information in your report. Depending the nature of the innovation and your unit of analysis (your work, your organization, or an industry), your report could include the following: A description of the digital innovation A discussion of the competitive and institutional landscape of your organization, including its current and desired status within this landscape. You can also include a discussion of your organizations business model, including its strengths and weaknesses, as well as the opportunities and threats it faces. The impact of digital innovation on the competitive and institutional landscape of your organization, or on the nature of work in your industry. We encourage you to support the logic behind your analysis by relying upon relevant frameworks to organize and explain the patterns you observe, or qualify your predictions. A set of recommendations that follow from the implications of your analysis above.

Provide a complete list of references at the end of your report and cite your sources appropriately. You also need to provide full URLs for web sources and permalinks if from library databases like Proquest. This report must be plagiarism free.
