Before beginning this component, reflect on your ideas (e.g., philosophy/ideology) and/or approach (e.g., actions) regarding how you negotiate both 'Tasks' (e.g., the actual chore, duty, or job that needs to be completed) and 'Relationships' (e.g., the people who may be directly and/or indirectly involved with getting the chore done) as a leader. Consider how the way you approach these two aspects is relevant to your involvement with or participation in leadership.

Self-Assessment Activity

In point form, address the following:

  1. State whether you believe you are more task-oriented or relationship-oriented, and why.
  2. Using the Leadership (Managerial) Grid discussed in Chapter 4 of the Northouse textbook (i.e., the chapter on the Behavioral Approach):
    1. Describe which Leadership Management style you believe best describes your current leadership tendencies.
    2. Describe which Leadership Management style you would like to have and why.

Written Narrative Reflection

Drawing on the information you included in your self-assessment activity, write. a narrative reflection in 1.5 - 3 .pages that discusses the following:

  1. When you are in a leadership role, how do you deal with the task aspects of the situation?
  2. When you are in a leadership role, how do you deal with the relationship aspects of the situation?
  3. Do you tend to focus on one at the expense of the other or do you try to focus on both at the same time?
  4. How do certain aspects of a situation impact whether you focus more on tasks vs. relationships?
  5. What changes could you make in terms of the way you balance tasks and relationships that would improve your leadership moving forward?
