1. I feel leadership is about motivation. In many ways, I think motivation uses many components to be a great leader. While researching leadership, I came across the video "How to motivate your employees as a leader" by David Burkus. This video connected with me because I am someone who feels joy when I am motivated, and that is how I want others to feel when they are working with me.
David discusses autonomy because people want to feel like they are in control even when they have requirements. It's like a parent with a child that needs to bathe, and instead of telling them to take a bath or shower, ask them what they are going to do. They now feel like they have a choice which they do, but the expectation is still being delivered they will be bathing. They are usually happier because they have a choice, and the parent is happier because they don't have to fight or nag with the child about it.
The next part of the discussion was on competence. I think we can all agree that when we do the same jobs over and over again, eventually, it becomes too easy, and we crave a challenge. On top of wanting a challenge, when a boss never allows you to do more challenging things, it starts to feel like they don't think you can handle which is infuriating or discouraging. I like when I start a job, and they are testing my limits to see what I know and what I need to learn. When an employer makes sure I am learning, I become more engaged and stay motivated, wanting to continue to learn, doing more and making me a more valuable team member. If the employer chooses to keep me doing what I already know, I become bored and will likely put less effort into my work until I decide I need to move on.
The last piece discussed is relatedness. This is a topic that I think I struggle with because I want to know I am held accountable for my work, not everyone's. I could see how I might turn that into assigning individual jobs instead of group ones as I should. Mentally I know that work should be like a puzzle, and each piece fits together to make the whole picture. However, I tend to look at things one piece at a time, even though when I start seeing how the pieces fit together, I will get excited at the big picture and want to do more.
It also reminds me of the group projects we have done in class. When we are working with people, we don't know anything about, the team will get stuck in "their" part of a project. Suppose time is taken to get to know each other. In that case, you begin to discuss more about the picture each person sees. Instead of having multiple pictures that fit together, you end up with one picture that displays everything everyone is excited about.
2. When I saw we were choosing a topic about leadership I instantly thought about the Chapter of Compassion and their dream of cleaning up the ocean. Boyan Slat brings compassion to a new meaning in the business world. Splat talks about the hurdlers and how to overcome them. What drives this form of leadership is compassion and determination in teamwork to make a dream come true.
Compassion and teamwork are areas I want to strive for in my life. I have experienced when leaders show compassion they can work together as an effective team. Compassion with coworkers can lead to a positive emotion, causing people to increase productivity. Some people are not natural born leaders, but I believe we all have the potential to lead. Slat had a dream when he was a young teenager; and now he is a leader in his own clean up business. The drive Slat had when someone told him the ocean clean would be an unachievable task, is inspiring. The work his team pulled together to make a difference in the world is an eye opener. It comes to show compassion and teamwork makes a dream happen. Anything is achievable. When people work in a compassionate environment they promote healthier relationships. These healthy relationships are where teamwork shines. Compassion can lead the organization to a beneficial future resulting in a good reputation.
I have struggled with compassion and teamwork. I have always wanted to prove I can do something independently, so I can take personal pride in achieving the goal. I have a history of coworkers letting me down by not pulling their own weight resulting in me having to take up their slack. I am trying to work on my empathy and get to know my coworkers on a personal level, because I think I would enjoy my work more if we came together as a team to achieve the goal versus solo. I am excited to start a career where I can open my eyes to compassion and teamwork, because I feel this will lead me down a path of a successful career.
