On June 04, 2017, M/V Shannon, a Liberian flagged oil tanker with a carrying capacity of 16000Gt, entered the Kingston Harbour. The Pilot while navigating the channel hit a reef and dispelled oil. The oily discharge drifted further into the harbour causing the following problems: . Damage to fishermen nets and canoes Damage to mangroves and aquatic life . The navigable channel was closed due to the discharge, interrupting normal services to other vessels After hearing of the incident, fishermen came to inspect their vessels, as well as, members from the Port Authority, the Maritime Authority and the National Environment & Planning Agency (NEPA) who came to conduct investigations. The fishermen argued that the area in which they fish is contaminated and hence they are seeking compensation for this interruption to their livelihood, as well as, damage to their properties.
