(One of the products in the cane sugar industry is molasses which can be fermented to produce ethyl alcohol, a CO2-rich vapor containing small amount of ethyl alcohol is evolved. The alcohol can be recovered by absorption with water in a sieve-tray tower. For the following conditions, determine the number of equilibrium stages required for countercurrent flow of liquid and gas under isothermal, isobaric conditions in the tower and neglecting mass transfer of all components except ethyl alcohol. Use the following data: Entering gas: 180kgmol/h;98%CO2 and 2% ethyl alcohol: 30C, and 110kPa Entering liquid: 146.2kgmol/h;100% water: 30C, and 110kPa Required recovery of ethyl alcohol: 97% Use the following equilibrium relation: Y=0.57X/(1+0.34X) Where Y= moles of alcohol/mole of alcohol-free gas and X= moles of alcohol/ moles of alcohol- free liquid (Hint you can solve the problem by plotting X vs. Y similar to x vs. y )
