The modern hospice movement was incubated by caregivers with a strong religious orientation, largely Christian. What should be the role of religion in palliative care today? In thinking about this question, take into account people with a terminal illness whose religious orientation differs from mainstream Christianity, have no religious affiliations, or belong to ethnic and racial groups that have not expressed much interest or comfort with the idea of hospice care. Can hospice care fulfill its promise without a strong religious orientation? Is "spirituality" identical with or significantly different from association with an established religion?
