Paragraph 2 (5-7 sentences) - Describe the outcome of your negotiation and how your exchange of information process was conducted. Also, describe how you closed the negotiation and by what means. Paragraph 3 (5-7 sentences) - Describe what you learned through the negotiation process. Incorporate concepts from the course that you felt prepared you for the negotiation, or what you felt you could have done better. Identify what you learned from your negotiating partner or yourself during your negotiation. Actual Negotiation Write-up Your job for this exercise is to go out and actually negotiate for something. You can negotiate for anything-dry cleaning services, a taxi bill, a restaurant meal, or a couch. This assignment should be the impetus for the negotiation. That is, I would like to see you initiate a negotiation that you would not have engaged in otherwise. My preference is for you to negotiate in a setting where negotiations are less common (e.g., not in a flea market). You can be the buyer or the seller, and although you do not need to complete a transaction to complete the exercise, the good or service that you negotiate for should be something that you might actually want. In your write-up aim to do the following: Negotiation setting Explain why this is an interesting setting. There are more opportunities to negotiate than we typically recognize. What did you learn about identifying opportunities to negotiate? Preparation Sometimes negotiation opportunities present themselves spontaneously (e.g., after receiving bad service). Other times, you have time to prepare (e.g., before meeting with your manager to ask for a raise). Describe how you prepared for the negotiation. Integration of material What concepts from the class apply? Identifying key lessons What did you learn about yourself and/or others from this exercise? Your response will be reviewed and graded by your peers in this course based on a grading rubric that aligns with these instructions. To receive a high score, your write-up must include at least three (3) paragraphs with the following content: Paragraph 1 (5-7 sentences) - Discuss the setting where you chose to conduct your negotiation and how you chose to prepare. Describe what made this an appealing environment to negotiate in and if you felt this setting would place either you or your negotiation partner at an advantage or disadvantage.
