Part 1: Magnet Behavior

Materials:

  • 2 magnets(Caution: Be very careful if working with strong earth magnets especially if you have 2 of them.)
  • set of 5 objects(I suggest to use objects made up of different types of metals (aluminum, iron, copper, stainless steel) and different types of materials (plastic, wood, glass, paper). If you have iron-fortified cereal let it soak in water until mushy and then run your magnet through it, if you have a very strong magnet check out a dollar bill to see what happens. Some other suggested objects are fingernail clippers, paperclips, batteries, nails, cast iron pan, plates, cups, silverware.) Some electronic devices may be damaged by strong magnets so please do not test those.

Procedure:

Make a prediction for each object as to whether or not the magnet will attract it. With each object, determine whether or not the magnet is attracted to it and record this in the table. (15 points)

Questions(5 points each)

1. Which of your predictions were wrong, why do you think that is?

2. How is the magnetic force similar to the force from static electricity?

3. How is the magnetic force different from the force from static electricity?

4. What observations of an object can tell you if an object is a magnet itself or some other type of material?

5. Can you shield the object from the magnetic field of the magnet? That is, what type of material could you use and how thick does it have to be?

Part 2: Visualizing Magnetic Field Lines.

Experimental

1. Watch the following video on Magnetic Field Lines in 3D.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8llkHQtaOlg

2. Draw a picture that shows how the iron filings line up. You don't need to draw each grain, just the general direction, a bunch of random scribbles will earn you no points!! (5 points)
