Perspectives on Personality: Self-Congruity Assessment
A number of Humanistic theorists emphasize the importance of "authenticity" and self-congruence. This exercise illustrates the assessment of Self-Congruence by asking the individuals to rate themselves as they currently view themselves, and as they would ideally like to be. The difference between these perceptions of the current and the ideal-self represent a measure of self-congruence, with LOWER scores reflecting HIGHER levels of self-congruence.
Step 1: Watch the videos of Freddie and John and write down their ratings of themselves along each of the 20 personality characteristics:
Freddie | Current Self | Ideal | DIFF | John | Current Self | Ideal | DIFF |
TOTAL DIFFS: Freddie: ______ John: ______
Step 2: Now calculate the Absolute Value of the Difference between the Current and Ideal ratings for Freddie and for John and put them in the Totals at the bottom. The absolute value of the differences are the differences between the pairs of ratings regardless of the direction of those differences. For example, the difference between at rating of 3 (Self) and 7 (Ideal) = 4, and so is the difference between a rating of 7 (Self) and 3 (Ideal).
Step 3. What did you notice in watching Freddie and John complete their ratings of themselves? Any observations about their reactions or differences in this regard? Step 4. What might Rogers have to say about Freddie and John? What is there level of self-congruency and how do they compare in that regard. Any dimensions that either of them seem especially interested in changing and, if so, in what directions? Step 5. Now go through and rate current self and ideal self along these same dimensions. Calculate your self-congruency score and compare it with John and Freddie's. How do they compare? Any observations or surprises for you in looking at your level of self-congruency?
