Access the Millikan Oil Drop simulation by the link provided above under Apparatus 2. Follow the instructions in the simulation. Click begin and release the oil drops by pressing on the Spritzer. Then, click on the magnifier to zoom in on a single drop. 3. For the suspended droplet, draw a FBD of what is happening. Please note the orientation of the positive and negative charged plates. [2 marks] 4. Complete 10 trials, and construct a data table in the following manner: [6 marks] you will need to calculate some of the following items; refer to next page for additional information on equations and constants) Trial Radius Volume Mass Voltage Fg (N) Electric Field Charge (C) Number (nm) (m 13) (kg ) NC 5. Group the values of similar charges together (trial group), and construct a second table to nce in charge in these groups. Order the values from least to greatest 13 marks Trial Group Average Charge in Groupings Difference in Charge between Groupings (i.e. B Group 2-Group 1) 5. Determine the value of the elementary charge. [3 marks] Discussion Questions: 1. Calculate and comment on the percent error you calculated for the elementary charge. In what ways did the design of the simulation contribute to this error? Explain. [3 marks] 2. The determination of the elementary charge was a significant accomplishment back in 1909. Reflect on modern technologies - how has knowing the fundamental charge been part of their design? Explain. [3 marks] Formula Sheet: Useful Constants Poil = 900 *9 /m3 g = 9.8049 /kg Ad = 3.0mm q = 1.602x10-19C Useful Equations sphere = =mr3 m = V = mgA %error = 19ch-dex x 100% B
