Layer 2 switches are intermediary network devices used to connect multiple hosts on the same network. Switches operate at the access layer of an enterprise/campus network, where client network devices connect directly to the network. Switches forward frames between devices connected to them. They maintain a MAC address table and forward frames based on a defined frame switching method. Cisco switches run Cisco ios and can be manually configured to better meet the needs of the network. This includes adjusting port speed, bandwidth, and security requirements. PCI PC3 They can be managed both locally and remotely. FACH FAD4 In this lab, you will build a simple topology FA0/2 using Ethernet LAN cabling to connect 3 PCs to a Cisco switch, learn how to make physical data PC2 and console connection to a switch, configure basic switch settings, observe MAC address learning and understand the role of the layer2 switch as an intermediary device in an Ethernet LAN. You will visualize the communication between end devices when they are on same or different IP subnets. In addition, you will also using basic network utilities such as Ping and ipconfig, and the use of simulation mode in Packet tracer. 2. Switch configuration Choose one of the PCs as admin PC. From the admin PC access the switch console by using a console cable Refer to the "lab reference" document posted to review the notes on establishing a connection with a network switch. console straight-thro PC1 (admin PC) Switch Terminal Access the switch command line interface (CLI) from the PC (Go to the terminal from desktop, press OK with the default settings). You can also access the CLI directly on the switch on the "CLI" tab. Some tips on using the command line given below. Refer to the lab reference document. O Some results are longer than one page. Use enter key to scroll down the results o Press enter to return to command prompt. 0 You can use Ctrl+C to abort and return to command line. To repeat a previous command, you can use the arrow keys on the keyboard. o Many commands are valid in a certain mode only. Pay attention to mode on the prompt. o Practice the commands for Initializing and reloading the switch. (Refer to the 'lab reference' document-section 4. for instructions). Once done, press enter to get back to the prompt. Take a screenshot of the commands you typed and place in a new Word document Examine the MAC address table on the switch What do you notice? Determine the MAC addresses that the switch has learned by displaying the MAC address table S1# show mac address-table MAC address Port Now ping from PC1 to PC2 (from command prompt). Display the table again. S1# show mac address-table Display only the MAC addresses that were learned by the switch dynamically S1# show mac-address-table dynamic Are the IP addresses of PC1, 2 and 3 on this list? Verify using the table from step 1. Clear the MAC address table and verify that it was cleared S1# clear mac-address-table dynamic 51# show mac address-table
