1a. After watching the video on George Carlin's "Shell Shock", I would say I found it to be interesting but also found some of the information was not as important to shell shock/PTSD. Or maybe I am not understanding it fully when Carlin is talking about how many syllables is in the word that keeps being changed i.e., "shell Shock", "battle fatigue" and "PTSD". I never knew that PTSD or "post-traumatic stress disorder" was known as anything other than exactly that before this class. The language that Carlin uses to explain and talk about PTSD is quite interesting and I can understand and agree with him when saying "Americans can't handle reality" so we have to "soften the pain or realism of what we're experiencing". 1b. By changing the use of terminology for what we now know as PTSD I think it has "softened" or "dulled" the severity of the condition thus making it seem as though it is not as important or serious, making it harder for individuals to get the right help that they so badly need ("Shell Shock", Carlin).

2. 2a. The first symptoms that Prof. Bourke documented in soldiers that went to wars "who suffered psychological trauma as a result of what they experienced in the war" were uncontrollable diarrhoea, severe anxiety, tics of facial muscles, stomach cramps, and some even as severe as losing their eyesight ("Shell Shock during World War One", Bourke). 2b. At the time scientists thought the cause for these symptoms was that a lot of the soldiers could not or did not know how to handle what they had experienced during wars. "...everyone had a 'breaking point': weak or strong, courageous or cowardly - war frightened everyone witless"("Shell Shock during World War One", Bourke).
