The program consists of four major types of instructions. The instruction mix and the CPI for each instruction type are given below, based on the result of a program trace experiment Consider the execution of a program that results in the execution of Instruction Type Arithmetic and logic Load/store with cache hit Branch Memory reference with cache miss CPI Instruction Mix (%) 60 18 12 10 4 The average CPI when the program is executed on a uniprocessor with the above trace results is CPI-0.6 + (2 0.18) + (4 0.12) + (8 0.1) = 2.24. The corres- ponding MIPS rate is (400 106)(224 106) ~ 178. which yielded the result of CPI-224 and MIPS rate = 178 Now assume that the program can be executed in eight parallel tasks or threads with roughly equal number of instructions executed in each task. Execution is on an 8-core system , so each core will execute 1/8 the instructions. Each core (processor) has the same performance as the single processor originally used. Coordination and synchronization between the parts adds an extra 25,000 instruction executions to each task (to each cores) Assume the same instruction mix as in the example for each task, but increase the CPI for memory reference with cache miss to 12 cycles due to contention for memory Recalculate CPI, MIPS and the speedup factor Hint: With the same distribution of instructions, but with the CPI raised to 12 for the Mem refs, we have the following distribution Instruction Mix 60% 18% 12% 10% Instruction Iype CPI Arithmetic and logic Load/store with cache hit Branch 12 Memory reference with cache miss (5 pts) Determine the average CPI.
