Maria Ciru 3 I hardly remember my grandmother except for the fact that she used to bounce 1 me on her knees by the old-fashioned brick fireplace and sing old songs. I was only four when she died. Her face is a faded image in the back of my mind. In contrast, I remember my grandfather very well. He was 6'4" tall, a towering 2 man with broad shoulders and a mustache that I watched turn from black to grey. His voice was deep, distinguishing him from others in our small picture-perfect town in southern Italy. To some, my grandfather appeared very powerful, and he used to scare my girlfriends away when they came to play or do homework. In fact, he was strong, but he was the gentlest and most understanding man I have ever known I still see him weeping softly as he reads a romantic novel in which his favorite character died after many trials and much tribulation. And I will never forget how carefully he set the tiny leg of our pet bird, Iario, who had become entangled in a fight with frisky Maurizio, our cat. Once, my brother and I accompanied him to our grandmother's grave at a nearby cemetery that was small but manicured. As we approached the cemetery, my tall grandfather bent down from time to time to pick wild flowers along the road. By the end of the journey, he had a dandy little bouquet, which he placed solemnly at my grandmother's grave while bountiful tears streamed down his husky, vulnerable face. My grandfather was always available to people. Mostly, he helped senior 4 citizens apply for disability or pension benefits or file medical-insurance claims. Several times, however, he was asked to placate siblings who had quarreled over a family inheritance. Many angry faces stormed into our home dissatisfied with what they had received, but they usually left smiling, convinced by my grandfather that their parents had, after all, distributed their possessions fairly. At times, he could even play Cupid by resolving disputes between couples 5 engaged to be married. Whether the problem concerned which family would pay for the wedding or who would buy the furniture, he would find a solution. As a result, our family attended many weddings in which my proud grandfather sat at the table of honor. On Sundays, there was always a tray of fresh, homemade cookies and a pot of 6 coffee on our oversized kitchen table for visitors who stopped by after Mass. Seeking advice about purchasing land or a house, they asked my grandfather if he thought the price was fair, the property valuable, the land productive. After a time, he took on the role of mediator, negotiating with a vengeance to obtain the fairest deal for both buyer and seller. I remember most vividly the hours we children spent listening to our 7 grandfather's stories. He sat by the fireplace in his wooden rocking chair and told us about the time he had spent in America. Each one of us kids would aim for the chair closest to him. We didn't want to miss anything he said. He told us about a huge tunnel, the Lincoln Tunnel, that was built under water. He also described the legendary Statue of Liberty. We were fascinated by his stories of that big industrialized land called America
