Introduction For this hands-on project/activity, the collision between a raw chicken egg and a landing pad (safety contraption) that you design and construct will be investigated. Impulse is the concept/equation which will dictate your success! Impulse = FAt = mAv where F is the magnitude of the applied force, At is the time interval over which the force is being applied, m is the mass of the object experiencing the force and Av is the change in velocity. In order for the raw egg to survive an actual collision with your landing pad, F must be minimized by At being maximized. Materials . Stop watch or visible clock that displays seconds . Meter Stick . Raw Chicken Egg(s) . A maximum of 10 sheets of copy/printer paper . A maximum of 2 meters of masking tape . A maximum of 5 rubber bands . A maximum of 5 drinking straws Specifications . Maximum dimensions of "Impulse Landing Pad" cannot exceed 50cm (1) x 50cm (w) x 10cm (h) . Raw chicken egg cannot be altered in any manner . All materials can be cut into smaller pieces . "Impulse Landing Pad" must be placed atop a cement/tile (solid) surface Procedure 1. Draw a rough sketch of your "Impulse Landing Pad". Include labels of what each segment will accomplish. 2. Construct your "Impulse Landing Pad" according to your rough sketch and above mentioned specifications. 3. Produce a technical drawing of your completed "Impulse Landing Pad" with exact measurements and a minimum of 2 views [top view, side view ...]. 4. Drop the raw chicken egg from a height of 1 meter, 1.5 meters and 2 meters into your "Impulse Landing Pad". 5. Calculate the acceleration, impulse and At (of collision) for each trial and record into the table below.
