An article that I came across is the effect of recent minimum wage increases on self-reported health in the United States (Siguad et al., 2022). In 2020, the article discusses that approximately 250,000 people in the United States earned the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2021) and many more were affected by a higher state-level minimum wage. They find that an increase in the minimum wage reduces health among men, especially those who are unemployed. Among women, an increase in the minimum wage leads to better mental health regardless of employment status, but those who are employed report a reduction in their general health status.

Raising the minimum wage has positive impacts, such as bringing people out of poverty and increasing income for individuals and families. However, increasing the minimum wage can also lead to increased unemployment, depending on the wage increase, because employers would seek automation as opposed to hiring workers. For example, a minimum wage increase is more likely to lead to reductions in employment if it is large, if the economy is weak, or if the workforce is made up of many low-skilled workers.

Conscious capitalism is a business philosophy that emphasizes the importance of social responsibility and sustainability. Conscious capital means operating a business ethically by serving the interest of all stakeholders. A conscious capitalist company would likely approach a minimum wage increase in a way that minimizes the negative impact on employment while maximizing the positive impact on workers and the community.
