As a military service member, handling personal identifiable information (PII) is something we train on and execute often. Some examples of PII include but are not limited to; full names, social security number, addresses, personal characteristics, contact information, and financial information.
A personal example I can share is from when I used to work in a correctional facility. The protocol before entering the facility, like most prisons, is to remove everything from your pockets, open up your bags to be searched, and lastly wanded by a medal detector. A coworker did not perform their due diligence that day because another worker with PII, his tax information entered the facility. He left his W2 on a desk for any inmate to see and when found out was removed from the facility where he would receive further reprimands. This coworker did not understand the security threats that come along with bringing PII into a secure enviorment. This information could have been used against him by an inmate to threaten him or his family.
Protecting PII in any environment is important to ensure that ethically no ones privacy is being threatened.
